Your Private London Walking Tour starts from the Portico of the National Gallery where you can look across Trafalgar Square towards Admiralty Arch, leading to Buckingham Palace. The National Gallery opened in 1838 to house one of Europe's greatest collections of Old Master's paintings. Italian Renaissance, Flemish, Dutch, Spanish, French, English and German works from their great artists are displayed.

You will look at a limited number of works such as those by Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael and Titian; Durer and Jan Van Eyck, Rubens and Rembrandt, Claude, Turner and some of the best examples of the French Impressionists, ending with Cezanne and some symbolists works by Van Gogh and Picasso.

From the National Gallery, walk down Whitehall to the Banqueting House built in 1619-22 for James I by Inigo Jones in Palladian style. Inside its impressive hall has a ceiling decorated by Rubens in 1629. Twenty years later Charles II was executed on a scaffold just outside the main window.

Further down Whitehall you enter Parliament Square with Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament on the left and Westminster Abbey across the square. Westminster Abbey was a royal mausoleum for many centuries and from 1066 when William I was crowned in the Abbey all but two Kings or Queens have held their coronations here. The Abbey was rebuilt in 1220 in the then new gothic style and the Henry VII Chapel (1503-19) is one of the most beautiful examples of the perpendicular gothic.

Please note, In the afternoons the order will be reversed by starting at the main entrance to Westminster Abbey and concluding at Trafalgar Square.
