The British Museum built in 1845-1857 on the site of the delightful but small Montague House is the first stop on this Private Walking Tour of London. It is one of the largest Museums in the world and compares only to the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The museum, only lately enhanced by the magnificent Great Court which is the largest covered square of Europe, is a must for the London visitor.

The steel and glass roof soaring to the sky, created by Sir Norman Foster, is a fitting symbol of the Museum's main aim which is "The advancement of learning by the provision of materials and facilities for research by the encouragement of the study of literature, history, archaeology and art". The British Museum houses a large Greek and Roman sculpture collection, Egyptian treasures and the recently opened oriental galleries.

Not far from the British Museum is the Sir John Soane's Museum, perhaps the most intimate and eccentric London house. This was the house and studio of one of the most individual and interesting British architects, Sir John Soane (1753-1837) who built the vaults and halls of the Bank of England and the Law Courts around Westminster Hall.

The House at 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields was his house and in the backyard is the Museum to display his extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, antiquities, architectural fragments and more. Hogarth's Rake's Progress and many Canalettos and Turners together with Piranesi and Clerissau's drawings are in two picture galleries, right and left of the courtyard.

Please note, Sir John Soanes Museum is closed Sundays and Mondays so on these days, more time will be spent in the British Museum. ... read more »

Like to try an alternative entertainment to the theatre? Here's an entertaining and informative option for those wanting a bit more than the regular tourist attractions. Away from regular tourist sights, down London's own "back-roads" are ancient pubs, coaching inns and riverside taverns which have survived 500 years of fire, flood, wartime Blitz and modern developers!

On this fully guided, four hour pub tour, you will visit pubs where Dickens and Shakespeare drank, where pirates and smugglers met, where highwaymen found their victims, where revolutionaries plotted and where Royalty consorted. See Victorian "Gin Palaces", haunted pubs with prison cells beneath them, pubs where great literature was written and even a pub built from timbers of the Mayflower ship!

This is not a drinking tour/pub crawl (although you will have time to drink in the pubs visited), but a tour through London's amazing social history, using pubs as focal points en route. You will hear a host of fascinating stories, including the history of "drink" in Britain.

You'll also discover the origin and meaning of many words and phrases in daily use, like "bringing someone down a peg or two", or why we get "dead drunk". There's time to sample an ale or two and time to treat yourself to some fish n chips along the way. Stop at a fish 'n' chip shop around 9.30pm. (food and drink are not included in the tour price)

All in all, an unbeatable night out. The tour returns to central London hotels at approximately 11pm. Children under 15 are not encouraged to take this tour. You will be taken around London by a minivan (max. 16 persons). Some walking is involved between locations. ... read more »

Marking the first time the treasures of King Tutankhamun have visited London in over 30 years, an extensive exhibition of more than 130 artifacts from the tomb of the celebrated Pharaoh and other Valley of the Kings ancestors will visit London from 15 November 2007. London is the only European city to host the treasures.

Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs is a collection of artifacts from the tomb of King Tutankhamun and other ancient royals. The exhibition is organized into 11 different galleries in the "bubble" at Londons O2 complex, and takes guests on a chronological journey of King Tutankhamun's period in the 18th dynasty.

Unlike the 1970's exhibition, which drew 1.8 million visitors to the British Museum, the current exhibition includes objects from King Tutankhamun's ancestors and relatives. Key items include King Tutankhamun's Royal Diadem (crown), King Tutankhamun's Coffinette, Tjuya's Sarcophagous (thought to be King Tutankhamun's grandmother), and many other priceless treasures and jewelry. All objects in the exhibition date back to the 18th dynasty and are more than 3,300 years old. The London exhibition marks the final time any objects from King Tutankhamun's tomb will travel outside of Egypt. So, don't miss this unique opportunity!

Please note waiting time to view the exhibition will be approximately half an hour Monday to Thursday and approximately one hour Friday to Sunday. ... read more »
